Frequently Asked Questions
What is a University-Model® school?
A University-Model® school blends classroom learning with home learning. Students attend campus two days per week for instruction and community, and continue their learning at home on the remaining days using teacher-prepared assignments and guidance.
Is Makor HaEmet a home school co-op?
No, Makor HaEmet is a Messianic Jewish University-Model school (www.umsi.org).
What grades does Makor HaEmet serve?
Our program currently serves students in Pre-K through 2nd grade, with plans to grow as the school community develops.
What is the curriculum?
We use an enriched curriculum that thoughtfully draws from trusted programs such as Abeka, Bob Jones, and other proven curricula with over 20 years of successful use in university-model classrooms.
Parents will receive a book list prior to the first day of school. Families can expect the total cost for required workbooks and readers to be under $200.
Do families need to be Jewish to attend?
No. Many families come from Christian backgrounds and are interested in learning more about the Jewish context of the Bible. All families who share our faith in Yeshua (Jesus) as the Messiah are welcome.
What is Messianic Judaism?
Messianic Judaism is a movement of Jewish and non-Jewish believers who believe Yeshua (Jesus) is the Messiah and who value the Jewish context and traditions of the Bible. At Makor HaEmet, students study both the Old and New Testaments and learn about the biblical feasts and rhythms found in Scripture.
Why choose a University-Model school?
Many families appreciate the balance of professional classroom instruction and meaningful parent involvement. This model allows children to learn in community while also benefiting from the flexibility and personal attention that home learning provides.
Do parents need teaching experience to participate in the home days?
Parents need not have teaching experience. Makor HaEmet takes the lead in the area of academics. All new concepts are introduced and taught at school by paid professionals while the application of the concept takes place at home. Teachers provide detailed assignment sheets each week and maintain open lines of communication. Parents act as co-instructors under the guidance of the classroom teacher.
What subjects do students learn?
Students learn foundational subjects such as reading, writing, math, history, and science, along with Bible, worship, Hebrew introduction, and hands-on learning activities that support curiosity and exploration.
What happens on the days students are not on campus?
On home learning days, students continue their learning with guidance from their parents using assignments and materials prepared by their teacher. These days allow children to practice skills, complete projects, and reinforce what they learned in class while spending meaningful time learning at home.
How involved do parents need to be?
Parent involvement is an important part of the University-Model®. Parents serve as learning guides on home days, helping their child complete assignments and practice new skills. Teachers provide clear instruction and support so families feel confident guiding their child’s learning.
Both parents in our family work full time outside the home. Will this model work for us?
One of the most important ingredients in the success of the University-Model is an available parent or adult family member who can assist and properly work with the student. For a family in which both parents work outside the home on a full-time basis and there is no additional adult to support, a more traditional 35-40 hours/week school is probably a better choice.
Do parents have to create lessons or curriculum?
No. Teachers provide the curriculum, lesson plans, and assignments. Parents simply help guide their child through the learning activities and practice on home days.
How can I or my children get involved?
